Daryl L. Foster stands poised to enter his third decade as a creative individual expressing his gifts through the art of dance. Over the last two decades Mr. Foster has been blessed to bring forth his gifts as a dancer, choreographer, administrator, and scholar. He is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama where his journey began at the University of Alabama as a Dance and English major. As a student he received scholarships for study at The American Dance Festival at Duke University, Harvard Summer Dance, The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, and the American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive. He began his performing career with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company as a dancer with DCDC2, and continued as a dancer in musical theater, and concert dance before exploring career paths as an instructor with various companies including American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive. He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Fine Art from The Florida State University where he focused in Choreography and Performance. He Moved to Atlanta Georgia in 2006 where he began his academic career as a lecturer in dance at Kennesaw State University, Spelman College, Agnes Scott College, and The University of Georgia. In 2010 Mr. Foster Founded, and directed LIFT, an organization dedicated to presenting the choreography, and performance of men of color based in the Atlanta area. In 2011 he founded EMERGING: A New Choreographers Workshop dedicated to nurturing new choreographers in the craft of choreography while having their work mentored, and fully produced. He is a published writer, and is currently serving as a regular dance contributor to the Georgia Voice.

Skills & Abilities

Program Management

·  In 2011, founded EMERGING, a choreographer workshop for new choreographers in the Metro Atlanta area.  EMERGING provides education opportunities for new choreographers to learn from professional artists from multiple disciplines

·   Serve as Producer from conception to production

·   Additional responsibilities include fundraising, advertising and promotion, and budget management

 

·  Currently serve as the Founder and Artistic Director for LIFT Men, Dance. Life.  Starting in 2010, LIFT is a choreographers showcase that features the work of male dancers in the Atlanta area and from around the country. The mission of this program is to increase visibility and awareness of the talented male dancers in the Metro Atlanta community

·   Responsibilities include program development, fundraising, marketing & advertising, vendor management (Woodruff Arts Center), scheduling, and creation & maintenance of budgets

·   As Artistic Director, responsible for the production, choreography and mentoring of artists

·   Created an annual scholarship for a talented young man to study dance for one year. 

 

·  Served as part of the artistic team for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival from July 2000 – October 2003.  The team was responsible for developing program curriculum that focused on works of William Shakespeare

 

Leadership

·  Currently serving as the contributing writer for dance, and culture for the Georgia Voice

·  Invited by Irvin “Magic” Johnson’s network ASPIRE TV to serve as expert on a panel for show “Magic in the Making”

·  Has served as a contributing writer for ArtsATL and other publications 2010 – present

·  Served as Chris Willis Road Manager for national and international tours from 2009-2012

·  From 2010 -2015, served in various leadership roles at GOTTA DANCE ATLANTA, Atlanta’s leading dance studio.

·   Creative Director responsible for various programs including special events and master classes

·   Currently serve as the manager of the work study and scholarship program

·   Staff Supervisor for over 25 persons

·   Additional responsibilities include fundraising, advertising and promotion,  and budget management

 

·  From 2001-2002, served as the Assistant to the Company Manager and Financial Manager for Urban Bush Women, Inc.

 

 

Public Relations

·   Responsible for marketing and public relations campaigns for the various events at Gotta Dance Atlanta.

·  As Director of Dance at Booker Middle School, increased awareness and participation of the dance program within the Sarasota community
